May 9: Vigil Held for Westray Anniversary

In honor of the miners who died in a methane and coal dust explosion on May 9, 1992, about 50 relatives, politicians and union leaders held a vigil not far from the former Westray mine site. Union leaders who spoke at the vigil said that governments and companies haven’t learned from the tragedy and that there haven’t been enough prosecutions under Bill C-45, the so-called Westray Act.
