Two Mounties in Alberta were shot last year during a struggle with a suspected car thief in a casino, with one dying. Federal investigators found that the RCMP violated federal OHS rules. The Mounties’ portable radios failed to transmit and receive inside the casino and a radio in a police cruiser couldn’t transmit or receive from the officers. In addition, the RCMP didn’t have safe alternative communication procedures for situations where radios are known to fail or not transmit or receive messages clearly. A health and safety officer issued a direction, ordering the RCMP to address these violation. The RCMP has appealed the direction.
