July 22: Union Demands Changes to Young Worker Protections


After a 15-year-old boy was killed when he became entangled in a conveyer belt, the Alberta Federation of Labour demanded changes in the laws to protect young workers, claiming Alberta’s youth labour laws are “among the worst in Canada.” In addition to wanting improvements in qualifications and inspections, the AFL wants a review of whether the operation of some heavy machinery should be barred for adolescents.
