July 14: Court Rejects Challenge to Lac-Megantic Settlement Fund

A Québec Superior Court judge rejected Canadian Pacific Railway’s challenge to a settlement that would compensate the victims of the 2013 Lac-Megantic derailment, which killed 47. The rail company had argued that the case should be heard in federal court. But the judge ruled the process would go forward in Québec. Canadian Pacific also argued the settlement fund was unfair because it would limit its ability to counter-sue other contributors to the fund, which contains about $431 million.
