Feb. 21: Company’s Investigation Reveals Cause of Fire

According to an internal investigation by Canadian Natural Resources (CNRL), a fire that injured five workers last month was caused by the opening of a coke drum valve, which allowed the release of hot hydrocarbons. All five workers have since been released from the hospital. CNRL said it didn’t know why the valve opened and is still investigating to determine if equipment malfunction or a break down in operating or maintenance practices occurred and if any changes need to be made.
