Dec. 8: Workers Sue over Refinery Explosion

Several workers injured in an explosion at a refinery are suing Consumers Co-operative Refineries Ltd. and associated companies that were involved in the plant’s refurbishment. An investigation found that the explosion, which injured 52 people in all, was caused by a ruptured pipe thinned by corrosion. The group claims that negligence put workers at risk, saying there were known safety concerns before the explosion, including possible gas leaks, lack of alarms and an inadequate emergency medical plan.
