Pulp Mill Fined $250,000 for Effluent Violations

A pulp mill converts wood into pulp using a kraft pulping process, which generates industrial effluent that undergoes treatment prior to discharge into Lake Superior via Blackbird Creek. This process is monitored by the MOE. On several occasions between July 1 and Dec. 30, 2013, the mill’s effluent didn’t meet the regulatory quality requirements. As a result, the pulp mill pleaded guilty to seven violations of the Environmental Protection Act and was fined $250,000 [AV Terrace Bay Inc., Govt. News Release, Oct. 27, 2015].
