Alert: Penalties Imposed in BC for OHS Violations in 2012 Exceed $2.9 Million

WorkSafeBC just released the total penalties imposed on employers in 2012 for OHS and workers’ comp violations. The highest single penalty for the year was imposed against Francesco Aquilini, Roberto Aquilini and Elisa Aquilini et al. for failing to maintain a farm vehicle used to transport workers in safe operating condition. This violation was a repeat offense and cost them $125,277.

One company was hit with the second and third highest penalties. Skylite Building Maintenance Ltd. was fined for repeatedly exposing workers to asbestos. In 2012, it was hit with three penalties totalling $227,500. Other highlights:

  • Number of penalties: 260 penalties totalling $2,909,967.52
  • Number of employers penalized: 225
  • Highest penalty amount: $125,277
  • Lowest penalty amount: $700
  • Number of penalties for incidents involving fatalities: 6
