Property Owner Fined $50,000 for Elevator Incident

A team of workers from an elevator maintenance company was sent to a building to repair one of the elevators. They performed an initial assessment, then proceeded to the elevator machine room. One of the workers pulled on the cables by hand to help them move. As he did so, another worker proceeded to drift the brakes of the elevator, causing the cables to suddenly move. As they moved, they grabbed the first worker’s hands, causing injuries to both of them. The MOL investigated and concluded that the property owner had failed to ensure that the elevator’s motor was guarded as required. The court fined it $50,000 [Oxford Properties Group Inc., Govt.
