Post-Incident Drug &/Or Alcohol Testing Procedures
Drug and/or alcohol testing in the workplace is complex. Employers in Canada are generally permitted to require a worker to submit to drug and/or alcohol testing following a significant safety-related incident, provided the testing is conducted in a reasonable, non-discriminatory manner and is connected to legitimate safety objectives. Employers should therefore maintain written procedures clearly identifying which incidents may trigger testing and the process that will be followed.
HOW TO USE THIS PROCEDURE
This model procedure is intended to be adapted to the workplace, existing drug and/or alcohol policies, and the terms of any applicable collective agreement. All workers and supervisors must be trained on this procedure.
