Portable generators are internal combustion engines used to generate electricity. While extremely useful in disaster cleanup or other operations requiring a source of temporary or remote power, portable generators also create significant hazards, including:

• Shock and electrocution resulting from improper use of power or accidentally energizing other electrical systems.
• Carbon monoxide poisoning from generator’s exhaust.
• Fire which may result from improper refueling or storing of generator fuel.
• Noise and vibration.
