Night Club Overcrowding Penalty Cut from $100K to $40K

The owner of an overcrowded night club was fined the maximum $100,000 for a first Safety Codes Act violation. The owner claimed the penalty was too harsh and the court agreed, reducing it to $40,000. Although letting a club get overcrowded’73% beyond capacity in this case’is extremely dangerous, there were no injuries, the owner pled guilty and was already out $20,000 after being forced to close for 3 days after the offence [R v 1742535 Alberta Corp., 2018 ABPC 248 (CanLII), Oct. 24, 2018].
