MOL Charges Engineer in Fatal Mall Parking Garage Collapse

The roof-deck garage of a mall caved in, killing two women and injuring several others. The MOL charged a professional engineer with OHS violations, alleging, among other things, that he endangered a worker by providing ”negligent advice.’ He and a colleague had inspected the mall and, a month before the collapse, reported that it was structurally sound despite finding rust on beams. In fact, residents and storekeepers in the mall had complained for awhile about severe leaking that caused pieces of cement to crumble and beams to rust [Robert Wood, April 23, 2013].
