Mining Company Penalized $80,000 for Depositing Effluent into Lake

A mining company deposited effluent, which contained radium-226 and nickel in excess of authorized limits, into Bucko Lake. As a result, the company pleaded guilty to two violations of the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations under the Fisheries Act for depositing mine effluent into water frequented by fish. It was ordered to pay $80,000 to the Environmental Damages Fund. In addition, the company’s name will be added to the Environmental Offenders Registry [CaNickel Mining Ltd., Govt.
