Mining Company Penalized $30,000 for Fisheries Act Violation

In a March 2013 incident, untreated and acutely lethal effluent was discharged from the Voisey’s Bay mine into the Anaktalak Bay. As a result, the mining company pleaded guilty to a violation of the federal Fisheries Act. The court fined it $5,000 and ordered it to pay $25,000 to the Environmental Damages Fund [Vale Newfoundland and Labrador Ltd., Govt. News Release, Aug. 25, 2016].
