Mine Rockfall Results in 2 Injuries and $110,000 Fine

Two gypsum mine workers were seriously injured when a ledge of rock weighing about 2,400 pounds fell on top of them. The mine had a pre-job safety analysis system, but there was no inspection and thus no detection of the hazardous ground conditions on the day of the incident. The employer pled guilty to one OHS violation, failing to inspect the worksite of an underground mine before work begins, and was fined $110,000 plus a 25% victim’s surcharge [CGC Inc., Govt. Press Release, July 14, 2021].
