Mine Penalized $70,000 for Violating Metal Mining Effluent Regulations

For about 10 months, a mining company failed to complete environmental monitoring as required, to submit environmental reports, and to notify and report on a limit exceedance in the effluent discharge. The company pleaded guilty to five violations of the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations under the Fisheries Act. The court fined it $5,000 and ordered it to pay $65,000 to the Environmental Damages Fund [Gibraltar Mines Ltd., Govt. News Release, July 13, 2016].
