Milk Company Fined $100,000 for Worker’s Burns

A worker for a milk company was checking that a pipe system had been properly cleaned using hot water. While taking apart one of the valves, he was suddenly sprayed by hot water, receiving first and second degree burns. An MOL investigation found that there was no need for the water in the pipes to be kept hot while the worker was checking the system. The company pleaded guilty to failing to take the reasonable precaution of ensuring that any water remaining in the pipe system wasn’t hot before a worker opened the system’s valves. The court fined it $100,000 [Parmalat Canada Inc., Govt. News Release, Jan. 26, 2012].
