Nov. 1: DOT-111 Rail Tanker Cars to Be Retired

As of Nov. 1, 2016, the older DOT-111 rail tanker cars, which were involved in the Lac-Mégantic tragedy, will no longer be able to transport crude oil or other dangerous goods on Canadian railways. That date is six months earlier than planned for cars without a layer of thermal protection and 16 months earlier than cars with such protection, which were originally scheduled to be phased out by May 2018.
