May 5: Human Rights Act Is Updated

The Human Rights Act was modernized to add two new prohibited grounds of discrimination: “family status” and “gender identity or expression.” These changes are the result of Bill 51, which received royal assent on May 5, 2017. The “family status” addition protects workers from discrimination arising from their commitment to the well-being of loved ones by caring for them. And the addition of “gender identity or expression” provides inclusive protection for transgender, bisexual, transsexual and intersex individuals.
