Feb. 2: Reminder Not to Hunt George River Caribou

The Department of Environment and Climate Change reminded residents that the hunting ban for the George River Caribou remains in effect and is essential to the herd’s recovery. A July 2016 census revealed a total of only 8,938 caribou remaining in the George River Caribou Herd and any mortality would be of concern. This herd has now decreased by 99% since the early 1990s when the population was estimated at about 800,000 animals.
