Inspections carried out by ECCC enforcement officers revealed potential violations due to the manner in which a company’s workers were disposing of fish-processing waste at facilities in Witless Bay and Port de Grave, NL. As a result, the company pleaded guilty to violations of the disposal-at-sea provisions of CEPA. The court ordered it to pay a total of $200,000 in penalties to the Environmental Damages Fund. In addition, the company’s name will be added to the Environmental Offenders Registry as a result of this conviction [Barry Group Inc., Govt. News Release, Dec. 14, 2016].
