The United Steelworkers met with the WHSCC to discuss compensation for former miners exposed to asbestos while working in Baie Verte. Of the 145 former workers who filed workers’ comp claims for asbestos-related diseases, only 45 have had their claims approved. The main problem is that provincial standards apply to long-term exposure to asbestos and don’t appear to measure the exposure in terms of intensity or fibres. Many of these workers had intense exposure over shorter periods of time.
