Road Safety New Penalties for Impaired and Speeding Drivers
Dec. 7: New penalties will be imposed on people driving while impaired or committing major speeding infractions. If stopped for driving under the influence of alcohol, drivers’ licences can now be suspended on the spot for 90 days. Drivers whose blood alcohol level is greater than 160 mg per 100 ml of blood or who refuse to provide a breath sample will have their vehicles seized for 30 days. And if a driver is stopped for going 40 km/h or more over the speed limit, his driver’s license could be suspended on the spot for 7, 30 or 60 days (depending on his driver’s record) and his vehicle seized for 30 days.
