Aug. 24: Total confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in Manitoba this season has reached 7, all of them in August. Two of the patients had to be hospitalized. Expect the count to rise as mosquito season doesn’t end until October.
July 30: Joining Alberta and Saskatchewan, Manitoba laid out its own made-in-Manitoba output-based pricing system that it claims will achieve meaningful greenhouse gas emissions cuts by industries without stifling economic and employment growth the way the federal plan does. The so-called Green Plan calls for industrial facilities with 50,000 or more tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions to meet specific emissions targets or either pay a $25 per tonne carbon price or acquire offset credits for exceeding their targets, starting in Jan. 1, 2019. The new system doesn’t cover municipalities, universities, hospitals, landfills, waste-water treatment facilities and natural gas distribution networks.
