Oct. 18: Federal Government Halts Montreal Sewage Plan

The federal government issued an order under the Fisheries Act, halting the City of Montreal’s plans to begin construction work that would dump eight billion litres of raw sewage into the St. Lawrence River. A panel of three independent scientific experts will undertake a review of the city’s plan. The mayor claims this decision puts the city’s water-treatment infrastructure in jeopardy. The city had planned to begin dumping the untreated wastewater into the river on Oct. 18 and continue until Oct. 25.
