Nov. 26: A bill was tabled in the legislature that would amend the OHS Act to require employers to adopt safety procedures for workers who work alone or in isolation and to provide additional protections for workers who work in retail premises that are open late at night, such as gas stations and convenience stores. These protections are similar to those recently implemented in BC.
Offshore Job Safety
Nov. 28: The government re-introduced legislation to support efforts to ensure that NS, NL and the federal government have the same offshore job safety rules. These three jurisdictions are close to completing an agreement for “mirror legislation” on offshore job safety. The agreement will replace the current system in which OHS requirements are imposed as a condition of a licence.
Nov. 23: The government announced its intention to propose a ban on the use of hand-held cell phones while driving as part of its effort to overhaul road safety laws. Québec recently tabled similar cell phone legislation. NL is currently the only province where restrictions on the use of cell phones and driving have actually been adopted.
