Canada’s Auditor-General released a performance audit report on Transport Canada that’s critical of its railway safety record. The Minister of Transport agreed with the recommendations and is going to act on them. Highlights from the report:
- Although Transport Canada planned to audit safety management systems for all 31 federal railways during a three-year period, only 14 audits were done
- Transport Canada has just half of the 20 auditors it needs to complete the federal inspections, many of whom weren’t properly trained
- Eight of the 14 audits that were done looked at just two major railway companies.
