The government urged residents to protect themselves from Lyme disease. Although the risk for getting this disease is still considered low, individuals—including workers who work outside—should take the following precautions to minimize their risk of exposure:
- When engaging in outdoor activities in areas where ticks are likely to live, wear appropriate clothing to limit the ticks’ access to your skin
- Wear light coloured clothing to make it easier to spot ticks
- Use insect repellent
- Perform a full body check for ticks after returning from an area where ticks are likely to live
- See a doctor if you develop a bull’s eye target rash or if you have flu-like symptoms after being bitten by a tick.
