March 31: Inadequate Training Led to Derailment
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada released its investigation report into the collision between a freight train and stationary iron ore train and derailment near Mai, Québec, in Jan. 2013. The freight train crew members sustained minor injuries. The investigation found that the freight train passed a signal displaying a restricting indication, but didn’t reduce its speed and so couldn’t stop in time. The locomotive engineer trainee who was at the train’s controls hadn’t yet received Canadian Rail Operating Rules training and, as a result, didn’t completely grasp the measures required under a restricting indication.
