June 21: Smoke from Forest Fires Can Impact Health
With a number of active forest fires in Yukon and one in Alaska near the Alaska/Yukon border, the Acting Yukon Medical Officer of Health reminded residents with asthma or other respiratory conditions to take special care during forest fire season. Smoke from such fires can irritate throats and sinuses and cause headaches, coughing, a runny nose and itchy eyes. Individuals who have asthma or chronic conditions can have more serious reactions. So they should stay indoors and limit exertion.
