June 20: Explosion at Fireworks Plant Kills Two Workers
A huge explosion at a fireworks plant killed two female workers, shaking homes and sending up a cloud of smoke that could be seen for kilometres outside Montréal. The subsequent fire caused a shutdown of the adjacent highway and evacuation of dozens of homes, businesses, a campground and a school. The plant was completely destroyed. An investigation into the blast’s cause is underway. But the government has expressed concern about a lack of fire hydrants near the site (the closest hydrants were on the other side of the highway).
