June 17: Hearing on Lac-Megantic Victim Fund Began
Québec Superior Court Justice Gaetan Dumas ll begin hearing arguments about whether he should approve the settlement fund for victims and creditors of the 2013 Lac-Megantic train derailment that killed 47 people. About 25 companies blamed for the disaster offered a combined $431.5 million in exchange for release from legal liability in the US and Canada. (The only company not to offer money is Canadian Pacific Railway.) Victims and creditors unanimously accepted the settlement fund terms on June 8.
