July 6: Derailed Oil Train Kills at Least 5 People
A train carrying cars of crude oil slipped downhill, derailed and exploded near the downtown of Lac-Mégantic. The resulting fires caused massive destruction and evacuations. Five people have been confirmed dead, but as at least 40 people are still missing, that number is expected to rise. As of now, it’s unclear how the train came loose; the investigation will likely focus on the brakes.
