The government announced the creation of an advisory panel on how the oil sands can meet GHG reduction goals. Its members include a prominent environmental activist, a well-known energy executive and an aboriginal leader. The group is to advise the government on how best to implement a 100-megatonne cap on emissions from the industry. It’ll look at regulatory changes, technological innovation and ways that money from a carbon tax can be spent to reduce the amount of carbon emitted per barrel. The panel will also examine effective ways to address regional environmental concerns beyond climate change.
