Workers age 55 and older are now the fastest growing segment of the labour force. Here are some key statistics on the health and safety experiences of older people in the workplace from WorkSafeBC’s recently released 2011 Statistics book:
- Occupational disease caused by exposure to asbestos is responsible for 70% of fatalities in older workers
- Falls account for 30% of non-motor vehicle injuries to older workers
- Older workers suffer from hearing loss due to noise exposure at a rate 4 times that of younger workers
- Older workers suffer fewer injuries than their younger co-workers but, when seriously injured, take longer to recover.
