Six communities are trying to win $5,000 for their fire department and an exclusive concert by having the highest percentage of seatbelt use. July 17 is the last day for communities to enter the contest. Seatbelt use in the Northwest Territories is the lowest in the country. A person is 13 times more likely to die in a motor vehicle collision if he or she isn’t wearing a seatbelt. And because most fatalities occur within 25 km of home, every vehicle occupant should wear a seatbelt no matter how short the trip will be.
