In the last two weeks, seven cases of scarlet fever have been reported in Yellowknife. Scarlet fever is caused by the same bacteria that causes strep throat. Anyone who thinks they may have scarlet fever or strep throat should see their doctor. The illness, much like the common cold or flu, can be spread through close contact. So stay home if you’re sick and wash your hands. Although scarlet fever can be quickly treated with antibiotics, if left untreated, it can cause liver and kidney damage.
