Train Safety, Part 1
June 10: A report from a House of Commons committee investigating railway safety raises “serious concerns” about the delays and manner in which railway safety management systems (SMSs) have been implemented. Since 2001, all railways must have SMSs but implementation hasn’t been sufficient. The report’s recommendations:
- An action plan and timelines for full implementation of SMSs should be developed
- Workers should be meaningfully consulted on the implementation of SMSs
- Rail safety inspections should be rigorous.
