Dec. 31: Protections for Offshore Oil Workers to Take Effect
Amendments to the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Resources Accord Implementation (Nova Scotia) Act will take effect Dec. 31, 2014, establishing one set of OHS rules for offshore oil and gas workers. Mirror amendments were adopted federally and in Newfoundland and Labrador. The changes:
- Add a new OHS section to the act, clarifying the roles and responsibilities of governments, regulators, employers and workers
- Assign authority for OHS officers to the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board
- Provide joint management of occupational health and safety by the federal and provincial governments
- Add new provincial oversight to the Department of Labour and Advanced Education for offshore occupational health and safety.
