Dec. 14: TSB Recommends that Fishing Crews Be Required to Wear PFDs

As a result of a fatal commercial fishing incident that occurred in Sept. 2015 off the West Coast of Vancouver Island, BC, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada issued five new recommendations, two of which relate to the use of personal floatation devices (PFDs). In that incident, only one crew member was wearing a PFD—and he was the only survivor when the vessel capsized. So the TSB is recommending that both WorkSafeBC and Transport Canada require crews on fishing vessels to wear suitable PFDs at all times on deck and develop ways to confirm that they’re complying.
