Nov. 7: The Health Services Minister announced regulations to support the introduction of electronic health records (EHRs) while ensuring that patient privacy is protected. The new regulations, issued under the E-Health (Personal Health Information Access and protection of Privacy) Act, will:
- Let individuals block access to their personal information when EHR implementation begins in the summer of 2009
- Establish a data stewardship committee to evaluate requests by researchers for access to information in EHRs
- Add new whistleblower protections
- Establish penalties for privacy and security violations of EHRs.
