Aug. 4: Coroner’s Jury Rules Mill Workers’ Deaths Were Accidental
A coroner’s jury ruled that the deaths of two mill workers in an explosion were accidental. The jury, which heard from almost 50 witnesses over 13 days, deliberated for two days and made 33 recommendations. The coroner made an additional eight recommendations. Their recommendations include:
- Installation of a fire-pumping system and a standalone first aid facility at the mill
- Use of a combustible gas monitor when workers report gas odours
- Development by WorkSafeBC of a video or visual presentation to show workers the health and safety hazards of combustible wood dust.
