WorkSafeBC says that between 2002 and 2012, back strain injury affected 12,000-15,000 workers a year, resulting in more than 140,000 claims. And over the last 30 years, back injuries accounted for 22-26% of all time-loss injuries. Other key back injury statistics:
- Although most back strain injuries were reported by men, women were actually more likely to have a back injury.
- Between 2003 and 2012, 26% of claims filed by workers between ages 35 and 44 were for back strain. (Back strain injury accounted for just 19% of total injuries for workers aged 15 to 24 and 11% for those 65 and older.)
- Overexertion is the most common cause for back strain injury; the second largest contributor was falls.
