The Law Commission of Ontario released a report containing 47 recommendations to better protect vulnerable workers. Vulnerable Workers and Precarious Work focuses on gaps in Ontario laws that leave women, racial minorities and immigrants, among others, at risk. The nine OHS-related recommendations include:
- Enforcement activity should include proactive inspections to ensure JHSCs and safety representatives are in place where required and effectively operational.
- The MOL should conduct more proactive inspections in all industries employing temporary foreign workers and industries in which vulnerable workers are at high risk for workplace injuries.
- The Labour Relations Board, MOL and Office of the Worker Adviser should ensure reprisal complaints for temporary foreign workers are heard before repatriation.
