April 12: Teachers Weren’t Properly Trained to Safely Deal with Autistic Child
WorkSafeBC agrees with staff who refused to work at an elementary school over safety concerns about handling a six-year-old student with autism. Since Sept. 2010, the school has reported 16 physical and/or threatening incidents between students and workers, but it’s unclear how many of those incidents involved this boy. The school district has a Crisis Response Plan in the Student Safety Plan, which includes a specific Crisis Prevention Intervention Protocol. But teachers weren’t specifically trained in this protocol and the related emergency response.
