A judge presiding over an inquiry into a fatal school bus crash says school bus drivers need more intense scrutiny for health issues and medications before being hired and should undergo random drug testing on the job. Other recommendations:
- School buses should be equipped with video surveillance cameras to monitor driver performance
- Alberta Transportation should review the safety of smaller school buses that have passenger compartments that extend further out than their cab and engine compartments
- School bus drivers should be required to disclose any mental or physical health issues and medications they’re taking
- Drivers should have to take defensive driving courses.
