Aug. 30: The government confirmed that Listeriosis played a role in the death of two Albertans. Listeriosis, which poses a threat to the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and others with weakened immune systems, has been linked to tainted meat products from a company called Maple Leaf. Just five days earlier, the government confirmed the province’s first human case of West Nile virus infection. The victim, a man in his 30s, apparently contracted the disease while travelling in Saskatchewan.
