Landscaping Company Fined $100,000 for Worker’s Fatal Fall

A worker for a landscaping company was walking up the entrance ramp of an underground parking facility when a car approached the ramp. He moved to the side of the ramp and stepped back, falling about 15 feet to the lower level of the exit ramp. He died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the fall. An MOL investigation found that the company failed to do a risk assessment at the worksite to identify hazards related to the work. In addition, workers hadn’t been given fall protection when they were at the open side of the flowerbeds and near the walls of the ramp. The company pleaded guilty to a safety offence and was fined $100,000 [Lafleur de la Capitale Inc., Govt. News Release, June 24, 2015].
