June 30: Abandoned Cargo Ship May Pose Spill Risk

An abandoned cargo ship on Lac Saint Louis could cause a spill. The ship, which was abandoned four years ago, has listed considerably to the point that there are concerns it could sink. Transport Canada notified the Canadian Coast Guard about the potential problem, which prompted an inspection of the vessel. This inspection found that the boat is stable and isn’t leaking any pollutants into the lake. But it does contain water contaminated by crude oil in its ballast.
